A round of Showdown, the birthday game show on your TV

Red is ahead 9–4 and the room knows it. This is the point in a birthday party where the losing team usually starts looking at the snacks, so Showdown gives them something better to do: whoever is behind picks the next game.

Blue takes Stack Attack off the board. The screen puts up what to grab, ten cups per player, then the rules, first finished wins, then the matchup, George against Jack. And then a banner lands that changes the evening: it’s a comeback round, and Blue’s points count triple. Go.

Blue wins. Two points become six, Red still banks one, and the board that said 9–4 now says 10–10. All square. Forty-four seconds ago this looked decided. You read it out, keep it fair and call what happened. The TV does the maths and picks up the drama from there.
